
The government on Wednesday approved the guarantee signing of the Under-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This approval was given in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India will host the Under-17 Women’s World Cup from October 11 to 30. The World Cup matches will be held in Navi Mumbai, Goa and Bhubaneshwar.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that Rs 60 crore will be spent on hosting the World Cup. 16 teams including India will participate in the tournament.
The Sports Minister said, Rs 10 crore assistance to All India Football Federation for sports ground maintenance, stadium, electricity, branding etc. will be met from budgetary allocation for National Sports Federations (NSF) assistance scheme.
He said that the Under-17 Women’s World Cup will play an important role in attracting the youth to the game and in the development of football in India. The event will not only promote football as the sport of choice among Indian girls, but is also set to leave a lasting legacy, which will facilitate girls and women in the country to embrace football and the sport in general.
Spain’s team became the winner in the 2018 World Cup held in Uruguay. India successfully hosted the Under-17 Men’s Football World Cup in 2017. There were six matches during this period.
