These were flagged off by India’s Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla. Ambassador of Afghanistan Fareed Mamundzai was also present on the occasion. India is sending 50 thousand metric tons of wheat on humanitarian basis to Afghanistan, which is suffering from food crisis. The first consignment which reached Afghanistan via Pakistan.
Foreign Secretary Shringla had said that 10 thousand metric tonnes of wheat has been sent in the first consignment. India had signed the MoU under the UN World Food Program. Since the route to Pakistan was to be used for sending wheat, the UN asked Pakistan to allow it. On Monday, 41 trucks from Afghanistan came to the Attari-Wagah border after getting the green signal from Pakistan.
Meanwhile, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday that the situation in Afghanistan is bad. More than 24 million Afghan people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. A group of eight senior emergency experts from UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations has also called for life-saving humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. More than 2.4 crore people are in urgent need of life saving assistance.
