Key Points:
- Melbourne Stars have a better balanced side between the two, at least on paper
- The Stars are loaded with experience right throughout and that can come in handy in crunch situations
- Melbourne Stars have already defeated Thunder in this edition of the tournament before and should be brimming with confidence
Team Analysis:
These are still early days in the Big Bash League 2021 and the reverse fixtures are already underway. Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars, the two sides who have already met, are set to take on each other in an important upcoming fixture.
Match Details:
Date: December 12, 2021
Time: 01:45 PM (IST)
Venue: Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney, Australia
Live Streaming: Sony LIV App
TV: Sony Sports Network
Pitch and Weather Conditions:
The conditions in Sydney are going to be very good for cricket weather-wise. The pitch was completely flat and great for batting in the first match played at Sydney Stadium. The same is going to be in store for this match as well. We think a score of around 170 is just about par batting first. The extra bounce in the surface tends to help the bowlers as well so once in a while a collapse is also seen at Sydney Stadium.
Team Preview:
Sydney Thunder (SYT):
Just like Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder too have won one and lost one game in the tournament up until now. However, they have a terrific net run rate of +0.501, which currently ensures that the Thunder sit pretty at the fifth spot on the ladder. A win here could push them to the second spot on the ladder and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
While it is difficult to comment on their form with a sample size of just two matches, they do have a decently-balanced side, at least on paper. Having said that, the lack of experience can be a dampener against a side as well experienced as Melbourne Stars. They will need to be at their full force against the Stars’ experienced unit and if they can do that, they should be well in business.
Likely XI: AD Hales, Sam Whiteman, M Gilkes, Sam Billings, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Christopher Green, Gurinder Sandhu, Tanveer Sangha.

Melbourne Stars (MLS):
Melbourne Stars started their run in the tournament with a record defeat at the hands of Sydney Sixers and have featured in only one game since then. They did manage to register a win in their second match, but the magnitude of the loss in their first game is still ensuring that Stars stay in the bottom half of the points table.
As it currently stands, Melbourne Stars are currently placed at the seventh spot on the ladder with one win and one loss and a terrible net run rate of -3.700. Going forward in the tournament, they would not only want to accumulate some points but would also want to improve their net run rate.
In their previous match, which also happened to be a reverse fixture of this upcoming match, Melbourne Stars just managed to edge past Sydney Thunder, beating them by four wickets. That win would have certainly instilled a lot of self-belief among the players, especially after the drubbing they got in the first match.
On paper, the Stars have an immaculately balanced side that just did not click in their first match. The likes of Marcus Stoinis, Joe Clarke, Glenn Maxwell, Andre Russell, and Nick Larkin can be too tough to handle on their days if they are able to do their job, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult.
Likely XI: Marcus Stoinis, Joe Clarke, Nick Larkin, Hilton Cartwright, BJ Webster, Glenn Maxwell, Andre Russell, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Qais Ahmad, Brody Couch, Adam Zampa.
