The Indian Premier League 2022 (IPL 2022) is likely to start at the end of March, but the two franchises are yet to announce their captain. Both these teams are Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Talking about Punjab, Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal are on fire in the race for captaincy. Meanwhile, there is news that Mayank will lead the team. The right-handed batsman is part of the Indian Test team and was one of the two players retained by the franchise along with young pacer Arshdeep Singh ahead of the mega auction earlier this month. Its formal announcement is expected soon.
An IPL source told news agency PTI, “There is every possibility that Mayank will captain the team. The announcement is expected by the end of this week. Punjab went to the auction with the highest amount. He put it to good use by buying Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada and left-arm spinner Harpreet Barader and Tamil Nadu’s explosive batsman Shah Rukh Khan. Dhawan’s name was also in the news as the captain, but the management wanted Agarwal to be the captain before the auction.
The source said, “Dhawan was always on the radar in the auction. He is a champion player but it seems that ever since KL Rahul left the team, Punjab wanted to see Mayank as the captain. Agarwal and Rahul had one of the best opening pairings in IPL over the years. Rahul will take over the command of Lucknow Supergiants this season. Agarwal had captained the side for some time last year when Rahul got injured. Agarwal scored over 400 runs in the last two seasons. He made his IPL debut in 2011 and has played 100 matches so far. The 31-year-old has also played 19 Tests and five ODIs for India.
