The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced his selection on Thursday, 9 September, with the tournament a little over a month away.
Star man Rashid Khan will lead the attack, and the team includes fellow all-rounders Mohammad Nabi and Sharafuddin Ashraf.
Front-line spinners Kais Ahmed and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have also been included in the Afghanistan roster for the tournament.
Afghanistan will begin their tournament in Sharjah on 25 October against the winners of Group B from the first round of the tournament – either Bangladesh, Oman, Papua New Guinea or Scotland.
Khan & Co. will be included in Group 2 as runners-up from India, New Zealand and Pakistan, as well as other qualifying pools (Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands or Sri Lanka).
Afghanistan have won three men’s T20 Internationals out of a total of 14 matches against full members of the Super 12 of the tournament in their history. All three of these victories came against the West Indies.
“The selection committee and ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) have not taken my consent for the team announced by ACB media,” he said.
“As the captain and the person responsible for the nation, I reserve the right to be a part of the team selection.
I am deciding to step down from the role of captain of the Afghanistan T20 team with immediate effect.
