England’s 15-man squad has been announced for the T20 World Cup 2021. Apart from this, the names of three reserve players have also been announced. Test captain Joe Root has not been included in this team, while all-rounder Ben Stokes, who is feeling mentally tired, has also not been included in the team.
England men’s head coach Chris Silverwood said Mills’ performances in the T20 Blast and The Hundred this season have cemented his position in the team. “Timal Mills deserves her inclusion and she has demonstrated over the years, but especially this summer she has all the skills to be successful at this level,”
Silverwood said.
“His exceptional pace is an exceptional one, and the way he has led the Sussexes and Southern Brave’s respective attacks in short-form games shows that he relishes the pressures of the big stage. He’s in our bowling unit. Will add variety, and we can’t wait to see him play in a big international tournament.”
Mills’ pace will help England make up for the loss of Jofra Archer, who was ruled out for the rest of the year with an elbow injury.
The biggest drawback for England is all-rounder Ben Stokes, who will continue his indefinite break from cricket and prioritize his mental well-being. Chris Woakes replaces him in the squad, who returned to T20I cricket this summer after a hiatus of more than five years.
Rashid Khan and Moeen Ali will look to make the most of the spin-friendly conditions in the UAE, with all-rounder Liam Livingstone providing support. Left-handers Sam Curran and David Willey will also join the attack, along with Chris Jordan and Mark Wood.
England, the runners-up of the 2016 Men’s T20 World Cup, would be hoping for a better performance in the upcoming event. They will start their campaign on 23 October against defending champions West Indies.
“We are excited about the prospect of challenging to win the ICC T20 World Cup,” said Silverwood. “I believe we have selected a squad that covers all bases and has the depth to be successful in what is expected to be a very competitive tournament featuring the best players in the world.”
