The ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is to be held from 18 October on the soil of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman. The Indian team has been announced for this mega event, but with this the deadline for the post of captaincy of Virat Kohli has also started, because it has been indicated that if the Indian team does not win the World Cup this time, then Virat Kohli’s The captaincy can go.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not happy with Virat’s captaincy losing the Champions Trophy in 2017, the ODI World Cup in 2019 and the World Test Championship (WTC) finals this year. It was discussed at length in early July at a meeting of BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajiv Shukla and Treasurer Arun Dhumal in Mumbai. An official who worked as a bridge between BCCI and Team India had given inputs about the activities going on inside the team.
Despite coach Ravi Shastri, sending Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a mentor is a sign that BCCI wants to win the World Cup to be hosted by it at all costs. The BCCI trusts Dhoni’s mind more than Shastri and Virat’s plans and knows that he can lead the team in the right direction by keeping it united. However, Dhoni’s suggestions in the UAE will have an impact on how head coach Ravi Shastri and skipper Kohli select the playing XI. It should not be forgotten that Dhoni’s mentor is Dhoni and Pant will appear in the playing XI without any trouble.
Virat’s captaincy was discussed after losing the WTC final:
How serious the BCCI is about this World Cup and the team, it is known that in July itself, the role of the Indian team and captain Virat Kohli was discussed in early July. Frustrated by the loss of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in Southampton from June 18-23, BCCI office-bearers took input from the official who acts as a bridge between the team and the board. A BCCI source told Dainik Jagran that all the board officials were upset over the defeat against New Zealand in the WTC final and the decision to play two spinners in it.
An official had said in the meeting that when it rained so much before the match, what was the need of feeding two spinners? Not only this, the officials were also upset with Bhuvneshwar Kumar not being taken on the tour of England and after the news came out that he did not want to play the Test. Bhuvneshwar had tweeted after such news came out that he is available to play in all formats (ODIs, Tests, T20s). The source said that there was also a discussion about Kuldeep Yadav. The BCCI office-bearers feel that the way they were given lesser chances since the 2019 World Cup and were later dropped from the team, it is not right.
Regarding this, an official working in the BCCI had updated the officials on the internal situation of the team and the methods of taking decisions. In that meeting, one official suggested to make three captains separately in all three formats (T20, ODI and Test), while the other suggested to make separate captains in Test and limited overs formats (T20, ODI). But the third official said that it is not right to change the captaincy before the World Cup. We should wait till the World Cup to make any changes.
However, after that meeting, the Indian team did well on the tour of England and took a 2–1 lead in the five-match Test series. Even after this, BCCI has kept Dhoni as a mentor and told whom he has more faith in. If India is not able to win the fourth consecutive ICC trophy under the captaincy of Virat, then Rohit Sharma can be seen captaining in the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia next year. At the same time, Virat will continue as the captain of the Test as the team has done well in this format.
- Board is not in favor of giving more chances to Virat in the ICC Trophy as captain
- After the World Cup, there has been a meeting between the officials on the option of captaincy.
- Discussion about separate captains for all three formats or two different captains for Test and limited overs formats
- An official had said, a decision should be taken only after the World Cup.
- Kohli has lost the 2017 Champions Trophy, 2019 ODI World Cup, 2021 ICC Test Championship
- If this team does not win the T20 World Cup, then Rohit Sharma can be seen captaining in Australia
- BCCI trusts Dhoni’s mind more than Virat and Shastri’s strategy in short format
