West Indies beat New Zealand by 3 runs in the opening match of Women’s Cricket World Cup. West Indies snatched victory from New Zealand’s jaws in a thrilling match on the back of a brilliant century from West Indies batsman Hayley Mathews and excellent bowling in the last over of Deandra Dattin.
Mathews played an innings of 119 runs, Datin ensured the victory of the team by taking two wickets in the last over. Chasing 260, New Zealand did not have a good start and the team got the first blow in the form of Suzy Bates. Bates is run out. Barring a partnership, New Zealand continued to lose wickets. Captain Sophie Devine played a brilliant innings of 108 runs for New Zealand but she could not get her team to win.
New Zealand had to score 6 runs in the last over but they could not do so. New Zealand lost 3 wickets in the last over. Earlier, batting first after losing the toss, Haley Mathews scored 259 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant 119 runs by Haley Mathews.
The tournament will have two matches on Saturday. Bangladesh will face South Africa in the first match while Australia will face England in the second match. India will start its campaign against Pakistan on 6 March.
